Scripture doesn’t leave “neighbor” vague. Leviticus 19:18 commands, “love your neighbor as yourself”, Jesus later calls these one of the two greatest commandments (Matthew 22:39).
But who qualifies? In Luke 10, a man is robbed and left injured on the road. Two religious leaders pass by without stopping. It’s a Samaritan, someone the culture looked down on who bandages his wounds, carries him to safety, and pays for his care. Jesus points to him as the true neighbor.
The message is simple but demanding neighbor isn’t about who lives near you or who’s easy to love. It’s about who needs you right now.
Good neighboring looks like showing up, not just feeling sorry. It’s practical, a meal, a ride, a listening ear. And it isn’t limited to people we like; Jesus even calls us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44).
So don’t wait for someone to ask who your neighbor is. Look around, then go and be one.
This kind of love also has a way of coming back around. Paul reminds believers to “bear one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2), painting community as a shared load rather than a solo effort. When we choose to notice and care for the people around us, we’re not just fulfilling a command, we’re building the kind of neighborhood where others are more willing to do the same for us.
